The grasses and sedges are often overlooked, sidelined for the more eye-catching flowers. However these valuable assets to the vegetation of our landscapes are really rather beautiful when you take the time to stop and have a real look.

So what have we spotted around Marlow? Quaking grass (Briza media) and it is wonderful.

When you see it move it isn't difficult to get where its name comes from and it is loved by birds including yellowhammers, linnets, greenfinches and house sparrows. They look like mini hops and they dance in the breeze and can be seen from now until around September. They will make you smile when you see them.
